Michigan – born Lane graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1954 and moved to New York for a stint at the Vogue art department. This whet his appetite for fashion and made him realize that he wanted to design and create. Shoes were his starting point – he worked on collections for Delman and Christian Dior. It was whilst working at the latter that he began embellishing shoes with rhinestones and played around with ideas for jewelry. As impressive as it is that royals, celebrities, and socialites choose Kenneth Lane jewelry, it was never his primary focus. His designs are still created with the everyday woman in mind.
